Assumed knowledge: You should be familiar with electronic device characteristics and have a good knowledge in physics, chemistry, material science, mathematics and signal processing.

Course Description

This course introduces the concepts of modern sensors and actuators. The subject aims are as follows:

- to explain some of the most important physical principles applied in sensors and actuators
- to show examples of the way that these principles are exploited in proprietary devices
- to highlight some of the most fundamental performance limitations which arise in these devices employing different physical principles

The course consists of the following modules:

  • Sensors and Transducers- Definitions, terminology, classification
  • Sensors and transducers general characteristics.
  • Sensors and transducers parameters
  • Thermal sensors and transducers
  • Mechanical sensors and transducers
  • Pressure sensors
  • Sensors and transducers for liquid environment measurements
  • Optical sensors and transducers
  • Chemical and physical sensors for gas and liquid media
  • Gas sensors
  • Biosensors

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Describe and interpret important physical principles applied in sensors and actuators.
  2. Design and fabricate sensors with desired physical and chemical properties.
  3. Describe the various types of sensors including thermal, mechanical, electrical, electromechanical and optical sensors.
  4. Use these sensors for physical, chemical, and biochemical applications.
