Purpose of the Program

The BP046PDS Bachelor of Education (Primary Education and Disability Studies) specialisation prepares you to teach learners with special needs, whether in special schools or mainstream schools.  You will develop your knowledge, skills and capabilities to work proactively with learners with disabilities, their families and other professionals in educational settings. 

This program offers you an education degree for primary teaching through a combination of theoretical knowledge, and professional experience. It prepares you for the dynamic and challenging world of education.  It provides you with globally transferable skills and a qualification that can lead you to practising as a teacher in Australia  and overseas.  You will experience a variety of interactive learning and teaching approaches, including both face to face and online. You will undertake Professional Experience placements, within a variety of educational settings that provide learning activities linking theory with practice, particulalry in relation to the special education sector. This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the Bundoora Campus.

You will undertake a capstone experience in the final year course TCHE2491 Professional Experience: Applied Education Project, in which you will conduct an independent research project into an aspect of your teaching practice and demonstrate your achievement of the AITSL standards for graduating teachers in your final teaching placement. 

On completion of the program you will be a professional practitioner within the field of education with a focus on disability education. You will aquire in depth  knowledge of learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment in this sector. You will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and teach in schools, however you will have skills knowledge and experience to also work in private enterprise, government agencies and community based organisations. You will use innovative applications of communication technology to support your teaching practice. Through critical reflection you will work ethically and collaboratively with colleagues and external professional and community representatives.

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program. Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University, subject to program entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

Program Entry Requirements 

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Students are required to complete a Working with Children Check before going on placement.

Prerequisites

Units 3 and 4–a study score of at least 20 in mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4–a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

CASPer Test 

All applicants must sit the CASPer test. CASPer is a requirement for many of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes. Working with Children Check

Please note that to undertake Professional Experience courses in year one to year four of the program, you must provide a satisfactory working with children check. If you are not able to provide this, you will be unable to complete the program.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

External Accreditation

The BP046PDS Bachelor of Education (Primary Education and Disability Studies) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) (www.vit.vic.edu.au).

In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT. Successful completion of this program will allow you to apply for Provisonal Registration with VIT. To obtain Provisional Registration, graduates are required to complete a VIT Registration application form and submit it to the Institute. Further information on the registration process and requirements can be found here.

Literacy and numeracy test:  In order to register with VIT, students will be required to pass a literacy and numeracy test prior to graduating from their program. This test is mandated by the Federal Government and is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Students are allowed a maximum of three attempts and must be successfully completed by the end of the second year of the program.   For more information please see https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/

Students enrolled prior to 2017: There is a transition period of three years where students enrolled prior to semester 1, 2017 may graduate from their program without completing the test but these graduates will only be granted provisional registration with VIT and they must successfully complete the test in the first six months of obtaining provisional registration. 

Students comencing from 2017: All new students commencing an accredited initial teacher education program will be required to undertake the test prior to graduation. The test must be passed by the end of the second year of enrolment in order to graduate from the program.

The program regularly consults with a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) that consists of high profile industry representatives. Part of the PAC’s brief is to ensure that the program's links with industry standards and practice remain current.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library. Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it.
