Purpose of the Program

This program has been designed for you to build advanced knowledge in both the theoretical and technical aspects of contemporary production in animation, games and interactivity.

In this studio-based program, you will engage with concepts and techniques of professional productions in the context of projects underpinned by contemporary developments in animation, games and interactivity. While acquiring skills in animation, game and interactive production, you will develop an independent vision of narrative, visual and interactive media through contemporary studio forms and devices.

On completion of the program, you will have high-level knowledge of the animation, games and ineractive media industries. You will be able to apply independent direction and communication skills, to realise professional solutions in motion and interaction design that are contemporary and engaging. You will be experienced in project planning, collaborative practice and management.

You will be encouraged to develop skills in life-long learning, negotiating the often complex web of professional relations in contemporary animated, games and interactive media productions.

Articulation and pathways

The Graduate Diploma of Animation, Games and Interactivity (GD193) is available as an exit award of the Master of Animation, Games and Interactivity (MC232).

You will have the option of exiting with the Graduate Diploma of Animation, Games and Interactivity (GD193) if you have successfully completed the 96 credit points listed in this program structure, or a combination of completing some courses and having been granted credit for previous study at an equivalent level (AQF 8), i.e. honours, graduate certificate or graduate diploma in the field of animation, games, interactivity and/or digital media.

The Graduate Diploma of Animation, Games and Interactivity (GD193) is available as an exit award only. Applicants must apply for the Master of Animation, Games and Interactivity (MC232).

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in animation, games and interactivity.

The degree has strong connections throughout the creative industry with organisations such as the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI - http://www.acmi.net.au), Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM - http://www.atomvic.org/), Film Victoria (http://www.film.vic.gov.au) and Screen Australia (http://www.screenaustralia.gov.au).

Students and staff are widely acknowledged and have exhibited in festivals and conferences that include Siggraph, MIAF, LIAF, MILIA and Annecy. All staff are practising designers, artists and industry practitioners, and experienced educators actively engaged in research in their areas of expertise.

Animation, Games and Interactivity has a Program Advisory Commitee (PAC) that links you with industry standards and practice. Ongoing engagement with the PAC ensures that this program is relevant to industry needs and expectations.

In addition, Animation, Games and Interactivity draws on outside industry experts as guest lecturers to ensure that you are exposed to the latest industry developments. Industry professionals also provide you with exposure to current industry practice.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities, and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
