Crisis and business continuity at RMIT

RMIT’s framework for ensuring its preparedness and resilience in the event of a major disruption comprises of interlinking elements.


Prevention is the proactive identification and management of material risks or threats to University people or operations. Done via threat identification workshops; business impact analysis; identification and analysis of minor matters or incidents that could escalate into critical disruptive events.


Being prepared to protect RMIT’s people, assets, infrastructure and organisation from disruptive or disaster events. Managed through development of incident response strategies and business continuity plans, plus appropriate training and testing.


The ability to respond rapidly and decisively to a disruptive event and manage its immediate consequences via emergency/ incident response; IT disaster recovery; and crisis response and management.

Business continuity and recovery

Business continuity and recovery involves keeping the business running; the ability to continue University operations at a minimum level of service (when needed) and ultimate recovery back to normal as quickly as possible after a disruptive event.

A post-incident review takes place after the crisis is over to analyse what worked, what didn’t and what lessons learned need to be fed back into the processes.



The key aims of the framework are:

  • Protection – of life, property, environment, wider community and reputation
  • Prevention – of impact and escalation
  • Preparedness – everyone knowing what to do and when – enabling rapid and effective response
  • Coordination – bringing together of resources to ensure effective emergency, crisis and recovery management
  • Resilience – enabling effective continuance, recovery or adaptation
