Vice-Chancellor’s Higher Degree by Research Publication Excellence Prize

Background

The Vice-Chancellor’s Higher Degree by Research Publication Excellence Prize recognises the outstanding research publications record of an RMIT Higher Degree by Research candidate. This record will include the total body of publications arising from their doctoral research as captured through a range of quantitative measures.

Research Master data is used to generate a short list based on the research output during the students candidature. To be eligible for this prize, Higher Degree by Research students must have been with RMIT for one (1) year minimum. Nominations will only be considered in fields where Research Master is not appropriate to determine excellence of published works; fields such as creative arts for example.

Selection of prize recipients is by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor R&I based on recommendations of an Award Committee with membership drawn from the College Pro Vice-Chancellors (R&I), Institute Directors and Dean-School of Graduate Research.

Eligibility

  1. Open to all current RMIT Higher Degree by Research candidates
  2. Winners not normally eligible again for a period of two years following receipt of this prize.

Process and documentation

There will be no formal call for nominations as the Research Office will identify and shortlist potential candidates on an evidence-based basis for consideration by the Awards Committee. Individuals identified by the Research Office whose portfolio of work may fall outside of Research Master data will be given the opportunity to submit supporting documentation.

The dossier will comprise the following documents

  1. Research Master report detailing HERDC publications authored by students (quality: impact factor; top journals for the field)
  2. Nominations will be received from the Heads of School, PVC’s (R&I) and Institute Directors to support applications where Research Master data does not capture or is inappropriate to determine excellence. The Research Office will contact supervisors for supporting documentation. Supporting documentation for nominations is limited to two (2) pages in length and should supplement Research Master data. A pro forma for nominations will be developed by SGR.

Selection criteria

In considering the nominations, the Award Committee will consider the total body of publications arising from their doctoral research as indicated by a range of quantitative measures:

  • HERDC Publications (quality: impact factor; top journals for the field)
  • Reviewers comments (if relevant)
  • Research output relative to opportunity (ROPE)
  • Supporting documentation for Creative Works, exhibitions etc.

Value of the prize

The Vice-Chancellor’s Higher Degree by Research Publication Excellence Prize will comprise:

  1. A cash award of $3000 paid to the awardee
  2. A certificate signed by the Vice-Chancellor
  3. A permanent record of the award on an appropriate webpage (Honour Board) of the University.
