To express RMIT’s commitment to transforming itself into an organisation that models institution-wide excellence in response to national and international calls for tertiary education to play an influential role in helping shape a sustainable future. In formulating this Policy, RMIT acknowledges that its identity and location, as well as its teaching and learning and research activities afford a particular sphere of influence that predisposes RMIT as a significant force to advance the sustainability agenda.
To embed sustainability principles and practices throughout learning & teaching, research and operational activities.
This policy is applicable to all staff members, students, contractors, service providers, clients, customers and visitors when they are engaged in University activities and is applicable at all RMIT locations whether in Australia or overseas.
1.1 Adopt a leadership role at a national and international level to shape a sustainable future.

1.3 Model institution-wide excellence in integrating sustainability into all activities.
2 Tertiary education
2.1 Engage students at all levels in learning about relevant sustainability concepts (knowledge, skills and values/attitudes), identifying issues of importance and taking actions in order to empower them as future leaders in industry and society in their chosen fields.
2.2 Embed sustainability capabilities/competencies within disciplinary and professional contexts, including where relevant challenges from beyond narrow or chosen discipline(s).
2.3 Support academic and teaching staff to develop high levels of discipline relevant sustainability literacy so that they are able (competent and confident) to facilitate sustainability learning.
3.1 Conduct sustainability-related and relevant research that advances the transition to sustainable futures.
3.2 Make RMIT a living laboratory, encouraging research that engages with internal infrastructure, process and people.
4 Community and partnerships
4.1 Proactively engage in and initiate partnerships and projects with industry and government which promote sustainability.
4.2 Contribute to society and the communities in which RMIT operates to promote sustainability.
4.3 Monitor and communicate performance and progress towards sustainability to staff, students, partners and the wider community.
5 Infrastructure and operations
5.1 Conduct all University functions in accordance with sustainability principles.
5.2 Meet (and exceed wherever possible), all legislative and regulatory requirements for sustainability and aim to achieve exemplary practices for higher education institutions.
5.3 Minimise the consumption of resources through sustainable procurement, reuse and recycling.
5.4 Protect and enhance biodiversity, particularly native species.
5.5 Build infrastructure to a high environmental standard, using innovative design and showcasing green technologies
5.6 Ensure that RMIT’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and actions enable a transition to a low carbon future, whilst adapting the University to the impacts of climate change.[Next: Supporting documents and information]
