It is assumed that you have knowledge about and competency in the use of basic business and accounting reports, concepts and practices.


Course Description

In this course, you will learn about business by running a simulated company in a realistic marketplace against competitor companies. You will be responsible for designing the strategy and implementing the operational decisions for your company. Therefore, you will be learning technical and social practice in the business context. To assist in improving your decision-making, you will be introduced to and required to use a range of business performance evaluation techniques and accounting and business reports in the strategic planning and operational decision-making of your simulated company. This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience. You will undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice. This course also provides you with a capstone experience, which will provide you with the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course provides you with the opportunity to develop the following specific capabilities:

  • knowledge and understanding of and skill in practical application of business performance analysis
  • knowledge and understanding of strategic business planning and skill in making tactical, commercial, operational decisions


On the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate, select and design appropriate strategic business options for an organization, in consideration of its industry and market environment. 
  2. Research, analyse, interpret and use accounting and business information for strategic and tactical organization planning.
  3. Flexibly adjust your business strategies and tactics to match changing industry and competitive circumstances.
  4. Communicate effectively and justify the rationale for your business decisions.


Overview of Learning Activities

The main learning activity in this course requires you to manage a simulated company. To do this, you will use the on-line, business simulation called Capstone. Your in-class learning experience may include lectures and individual and group work exercises, quizzes, and presentations. Your learning experience outside of class time will involve activities where you design the business strategy of and implement the operational decisions for your company and complete assignments, prescribed readings, producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.

These may include topic notes and slides, a study schedule, assessment details, links to relevant internet information, readings and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and sharing of information.
