ACCT1106 Accounting for Business Decisions

Prior to commencing studies in ACCT1107 Introduction to Financial and Management Accounting you are required to have an understanding of the accounting recording and reporting systems in an organisation, the conceptual issues that relate to accounting measurement and the role of accounting as an aid to financial decision making.


Course Description

This course is the second of two introductory accounting units in the MPA program. It builds on the principles developed in Accounting for Business Decisions. It introduces you to the accounting procedures of companies, techniques for analyising financial information, and develops the foundations for more advanced studies in financial and management accounting.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Successful completion of Introduction to Financial and Management Accounting means that you should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of internal control in organisations and be able to undertake internal control measures in an organisation
  • Undertake analysis and interpretation as an aid to decision making using various analysis tools
  • Understand the impact of financial and management accounting on organisations

In addition, the course provides an opportunity for you to develop and/or enhance generic capabilities. These include the ability to:

  • Collaborate and work in teams
  • Clearly communicate analysis and reasoning in both the written and oral form
  • Make judgements and be critical in their thinking and analysis
  • Use problem solving techniques



Overview of Learning Activities

To achieve the objectives listed above this course requires you to participate in various learning activities. These activities comprise the following:

  • Preparation for, attendance at and participation in scheduled seminars, workshops and laboratory sessions
  • Preparation for classes will include reading reference material, completion of topic questions and preparation of case studies
  • Learning will be centred on discussion seminars, practical workshops and computer laboratory classes
  • Class demonstrations, reading, discussion and case studies will support these practical activities. The learning experience will be supported by a number of electronic resources.
