Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Completion of previous study in strategic management, business strategy or strategic management accounting at undergraduate or postgraduate level and/or 2 years related work experience.


Course Description

In this course you will be encouraged to think about the objectives of measuring performance and the various ways in which performance measurement can be undertaken.  You will be involved in designing a performance measurement model for an organisation of your choice and explicating the rationale for your measures and their linkage to the business strategy of the organisation.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of this course you should be capable of:

  • identifing, describing and discussing the main aspects of performance measures
  • critically evaluating a range of performace measures linked to business strategy
  • designing a range of performance measures to meet the needs of an organisation strategy
  • communicating, both orally and in written form, the process and rationale for the design of a set of performance measures


At the conclusion of this course you should be able to:

  • evalaute a range of performance measures
  • describe and discuss the main factors to consider in designing performance measures
  • discuss the process of developing a range of  performance measures
  • think critically about approaches to business strategy and how and why performance measures may assist in organisational management


Overview of Learning Activities

The central learning experiences in this course will include the analysis and/or design of  organisational performance measures.  The range of learning activities will involve class discussion on aspects of business strategy and performace measurement design, case problems, interacting with industry speakers involved in performance measurement design and the presentation and discussion of project outcomes.


Overview of Learning Resources

A range of texts and articles will be referred to in class.  You will be given a list of suggested readings but you are required to undertake further reading throughout the duration of the course. 


Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course may involve a number of activities including the submission of a written report detailing the process of design of a range of organisational performance measures; class presentations and reflective journals detailing your experiences in undertaking the course.
