Course Description

This course will examine a number of approaches to leadership and management in organisations, encouraging students to critically evaluate the theories and models presented. Students will reflect on their own competencies with a view to developing their leadership and management skills. The course is designed to enable students to apply their academic learning to a contemporary workplace situation.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will help students develop their ability to:
• pursue continuous personal development of knowledge and skills related to a management career
• work collaboratively
• communicate ideas, intentions and outcomes


At the conclusion of this course students will be able to:

• Critically evaluate theories, models and frameworks of leadership and management.
• Knowledgeably discuss current and controversial issues in leadership.
• Apply knowledge and learning to a contemporary workplace situation.
• Understand the impact of their personal development through the acquisition of self-improvement and self-assessment.


Overview of Learning Activities

Students will:

  • work through the structured study program provided either online or face to face, engaging with the activities, case studies and exercises provided
  • undertake self-directed reading of literature related to management and leadership and apply the knowledge through group discussion (via the discussion board or in class depending on mode) exercises and assessment.
  • undertake self-assessments and seek feedback from peers and colleagues with the aim of increasing self knowledge.
  • apply the conceptual and practical learning to their own management and leadership development through the assessment tasks


Overview of Learning Resources

In addition to a textbook, students will have access to online course materials on the Learning Hub and additional information from the RMIT Library. Students will be required to read widely from references provided and undertake their own research via the library data bases.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course is concerned with students’ ability to synthesise and present knowledge on the meaning and competencies of leading and managing, to increase self knowledge and to develop strategies to improve your own leadership competencies. This will occur through written work and/or an exam.
