Course Description

This course will develop your knowledge of the role of building services in determining building performance. You will also develop your understandings of how various types of building services equipment work and how they are integrated into a building. Topics covered include: heating cooling, lighting, energy supply, on-site power generation, building management systems, water supply and waste systems, fire safety, vertical transportation and building services for high-performance buildings. Energy efficiency is a recurring theme throughout the course.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Determine and apply knowledge of complex construction management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
  • Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse construction management stakeholders
  • Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
  • Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify building services equipment and explain its function
  • Describe how building services are integrated into a building
  • interpret building services drawings
  • Explain how building services modify the indoor environment
  • Determine how building performance and regulatory requirements affect the design and commissioning of building services
  • Explain how energy is supplied to and used in buildings and the impact of energy efficiency on the design of sustainable buildings


Overview of Learning Activities

Topics will be introduced through lectures and developed further through workshops and guided readings. Workshop activities include class exercises, working in laboratories and building site visits.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include, but is not limited to, assignments, reports, on-line tests and a final exam.
