Course Description

This course builds on the student’ s knowledge and experience of project management, communication, organisational dynamics, self-management and team management. Cross-functional Project Management will typically expand the student’ s view of different styles and techniques required to manage cross-functional projects that have executive management visibility. The course also addresses the typical Business vs IT tensions that evolve in during project planning and execution.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to:
- effectively manage the start-up processes for business and IT projects
- prepare and implement a project management plan
- develop and implement a communication strategy
- recognise and respond to risks in delivering business of IT projects
- use project management tools, techniques and templates.
 



Overview of Learning Activities

The course consists of a series of lectures and interactive workshops that cover the topics vital to the management of business and IT projects. The topics cover the basic knowledge and skills necessary for project management and will explore important contemporary issues in project management. Students are expected to bring to the course their academic and professional experiences and take responsibility for their own learning to enable them to contribute further to the community and their own professional development.

Upon successful completion of a pre-course activity, the students will be focused on some element of cross functional business or IT project management. Workshops will be a mixture of lectures and interactive learning. Students will work in syndicate groups to prepare for a major assignment which involves the management of a project or the addressing of key issues identified by the students. Students will be given a number of templates and examples that can be immediately applied to any project.
