Course Description
This course provides students with an understanding of the structured systems analysis processes by explaining important modelling and management concepts, cost considerations and interrelationships of business issues. Emphasis is on the strategies and techniques of systems analysis for producing logical models for dealing with complexity in the development of information systems. The course approaches the development of information systems from a problem-solving perspective.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the conclusion of this course, you should develop the following capabilities:
- Ability to identify the information and processing needs of the organization.
- Ability to elicit identifies, recognize, and capture requirements for information systems.
- Ability to negotiate solutions with customers that supports defined project outcomes
- Ability to produce a structured system specification for a simple system from system analysis.
- Ability to clearly represent the system analysis by means of basic diagrammatic modelling tools.
- Ability to recognise importance of Information Technology in Systems Analysis.
- Ability to critically evaluate appropriate strategies and tools for implementing Business Information System Projects.
At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:
- Solve problems systematically, negotiate solutions with customers and produce business requirements specification.
- Critically and professionally resolve issues that arise during the project requirements definition
- Critically evaluate appropriate System Analysis methodologies/ tools available, and knowledge when can be applied.
Overview of Learning Activities
To achieve the objectives listed above, this subject requires the student to participate in various learning activities. These activities comprise the following:
- Attendance at, note-taking during, and participation in, scheduled lectures/design workshops (combined 3 hour class).
- Reading of distributed subject notes and articles.
- Completion of designated systems design centred tasks.

Students are advised to purchase the prescribed text.
Overview of Assessment
A student in this course is required to satisfactorily complete a set of practical assignments and exam to pass the course.
Should the course coordinator deem that variation to the assessment tasks is needed, then this will be discussed with the class and will only proceed with documented consent of 75 percent of the class.
