Course Description
This course provides an understanding of computer architecture and the relationships between the major items of computer hardware. To provide the student with the opportunity to learn the relationship between hardware and software. To examine the hardware and software factors to be considered when evaluating tenders to purchase commercial computer systems.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon completion of this course, students will have:
• an understanding of computer architecture.
• an understanding of operating systems
• an understanding data communications
• substantial practical experience in using Unix, the World Wide Web, network protocols, and other Internet and personal computer utilities.
A key objective of this course is to ensure that each student has a base set of practical skills needed in a computer-based business environment.
Overview of Learning Activities
The subject consists of a series of three hour classes structured as a two hour lecture and a one hour practical session. The lectures will present the necessary theory in information technology. In the practical sessions students will be given hands-on exercises to reinforce the material presented in the lecture. The practical sessions will also be used to ensure that each student has the necessary computer skills needed to support learning activities in other subjects of this course. Any practical work not completed in class time must be completed outside class time. It is expected that students will spend 7 hours per week outside class times completing work from the practical class and working on the assignments.
