Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

To successfully complete this course, students should have the ability to solve fundamental problems in radio link calculations (including power budgets). Students are required to have successfully completed the course EEET2115 – Communication Engineering 3, an equivalent course or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.


Course Description

Introduction to radar systems and system block diagrams for pulse radar. Radar power equation and radar cross section. Introduction to radar signal processing, waveform design and pulse compression radar systems. Functions of various types of radar, radar system performance in the composite environment. Radar targets and target spectrums. Radar interference effects, weather, sea and land backscatter. Radar receiver principles and radar signal processing. Application of DSP to radar. Radar filters, delay line processing, tracking radars and the Kalman filter.

On successful completion, students will be able to:

1. Reproduce a system block diagram for various types of radar systems.

2. Calculate the range for a radar system and the radar cross section of targets.

3. Be able to explain the functions of various types of radar.

4. Be able to describe the effects on radar system performance of intereference effects such as weather and back scattering.

5. Be able to evaluate the differences between different types of radar receivers.
