Course Description
The practice of financial planning draws upon a range of disciplines and from the perspective of client’s service culminates in the preparation of a financial plan for a client. It must also be recognised that the delivery of financial planning services constitutes a business and, to be successful, a practice requires understanding of regulation and the application of business management principles and the techniques.
This course is a capstone course which aims to draw together knowledge and skills acquired from earlier studies within the degree.
One aspect of the course requires the application of these skills in the preparation, presentation, implementation and review of a Statement of Advice for a client.
A second aspect of the course focuses on financial planning practice management and aims to ensure students are aware of many of the practical issues that will confront them in the financial planning industry.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the conclusion of this course, a student should be able to:
1. Identify and discuss issues relating to management of a financial planning practice.
2. Identify client data requirements and demonstrate competence in the application of data collection techniques, including interview techniques.
3. Demonstrate competence in identifying clients’ objectives and needs and establishing clients’ risk profile.
4. Demonstrate competence in preparing a range of strategies based on clients objectives and needs.
5. Prepare a Statement of Advice appropriate for the client.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the procedures necessary to implement and review a financial plan
7. Demonstrate knowledge of ethical issues relevant to financial planning and an understanding of the Financial Planning Association of Australia - Code of Ethics and Rules of Professional conduct.
8. Discuss issues relevant to the business management of a financial planning practice.
9. Identify and discuss contemporary issues relating to the Financial Planning Profession.

To achieve the objectives listed above this course requires you to participate in various learning activities. These activities comprise the following:
1. Attendance at, and note-taking during, scheduled lectures.
2. Reading of; and note-taking from references.
3• Completion of assigned tasks for the course’s tutorials prior to relevant tutorials.
4. Completion of assigned assessment tasks.

Students are encouraged to read contemporary media articles and Financial Planning magazines throughout the course of study.
Overview of Assessment
The assessment tasks are to:
1. Prepare a Statement of Advice and a Client File
2. Final Examination
To pass this course students must achieve 50% of the marks available in each of the above two assessments.
