Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
The Minor Thesis can only be taken in the final semester of the Master of Engineering program. It will draw extensively on material learned in the prior coursework component. You will choose a topic in yourarea of interest/expertise and will work under the guidance of an individual supervisor.
Course Description
This course provides an opportunity for you to perform an individual piece of thesis work in a specified topic area for the minor component of the degree.
This is one semester of full time research work which is assessed by a Minor Thesis.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
You are expected to carry out an individual piece of research work on a specified topic area, as a minor thesis, for the minor component.
As a result of this course, you will:
•Be able to provide a critical survey of the literature;
•Learn to conduct a sustained program of independent work and the work will be original i.e. your own work;
•Have made a contribution to or exhibited a development in the application of knowledge;
•Improve skills in technical writing to provide a thesis document.
Overview of Learning Activities
You must carry out the sustained program of independent work, and the work must be original. You are expected to demonstrate a general understanding of the field of study. The work carried must make a contribution to or show a development in the application of knowledge. The work must provide a clear indication of your ability to undertake systematic enquiry. The literature relevant to the work must have been adequately surveyed. You must demonstrate adequate skill in technical writing and know how to marshal information into a satisfactory report.
Overview of Learning Resources
There are no prescribed references. You should conduct research in a topic of your choice including a literature search to show your mastery of the topic. The supervisor may guide you in your literature search.
Overview of Assessment
At the end of the semester, you have to submit a Minor Thesis of approximately 40 pages.
