Course Description

In this course you will learn and evaluate theories and models of professional development and team building. You will analyse a range of organisational mission statements and reflect on the implications for alignment of values between workers and employers.

You will explore employment opportunities and experiences in private, corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors. You will identify your professional short and medium term goals and develop a plan to meet these.

You will identify and critically reflect on your own skills, capabilities and preparedness for professional employment.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Course Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Display skills in the preparation of professional application materials in a range of digital and print settings;
  • Identify and describe skills, knowledge and capabilities needed to pursue professional goals and to refine these through experiences;
  • Recognise and apply theories of organisational structure change and cultures;
  • Analyse and further develop professional goals in the light of the work practice experience.


Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge of principles and practices in natural resource management, sustainability, globalisation and environmental management to professional practice or further study;
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on knowledge related to the social implications of environmental concerns and challenges both in Australia and globally;
  • Communicate effectively using appropriate formats, media and styles to a range of audiences including other professionals, the public, government and non-government agencies, and develop collaborative partnerships.


Overview of Learning Activities

The course will be delivered through a series of workshops designed to develop your knowledge of organisational theories and professional development in a range of contexts. Learning activities will focus on development of informed goals and application of concepts to your work practice experience. This will involve team-based and individual tasks. Additionally, you will be asked to demonstrate your learning through the preparation and analysis of a self-directed learning plan, a mid-placement reflection on work practice and a summative report which draws together both program and work practice experience. Discussions, debate and peer reflection are an integral part of the course and you will be expected to contribute to a learning community, drawing on course materials alongside your own independent learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

The assessment tasks may include goal setting and self-evaluation exercises, and reflective reports against those goals.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester by your teachers and peers in class and/or online discussions, and through individual and/or group feedback on practical exercises.
