Course Description
In this course you will learn about the world of work in the sustainability sector, and your positioning in this world. This includes an understanding of workplace dynamics and approaches, including communication, rights, equity, inclusivity and care in the context of socio-environmental work. In this course you will also reflect on the implications for alignment of values between workers and employers.
You will explore employment opportunities and experiences in private, corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors. You will reflect on your professional goals and develop strategies to pursue these goals.
You will identify and critically reflect on your own skills, capabilities and preparedness for professional employment.
This course includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace contexts and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge of principles and practices in natural resource management, sustainability; globalisation and environmental management to professional practice or further study;
- Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on knowledge related to the social implications of environmental concerns and challenges both in Australia and globally;
- Communicate effectively using appropriate formats, media and styles to a range of audiences including other professionals, the public, government and non-government agencies, and develop collaborative partnerships.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Display skills in the preparation of professional employment application materials;
- Identify and describe skills, knowledge and capabilities needed to pursue professional goals and to refine these through experiences;
- Recognise organisational structure dynamics and cultures;
- Analyse and further develop professional goals in the light of the work practice experience.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course will be delivered through a range of activities such as workshops, group discussion, work placements, group activities and individual learning. Learning activities will focus on development of informed goals and application of concepts to your work practice experience. Discussions, debate and peer reflection are an integral part of the course and you will be expected to contribute to a learning community, drawing on course materials alongside your own independent learning.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment Tasks
- Developing placement preparation materials (20% Linked to CLO 1 and 2)
- Mid-placement review and evaluation of sustainability work and personal objectives (40% Linked to CLO 2 and 3)
- Critical reflection on placement experience and employment in the sustainability field (40% Linked to CLO 2, 3 and 4)
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester by your teachers and peers in class and/or online discussions, and through individual and/or group feedback on practical exercises.
