Course Description
This course will provide you with the opportunity to carry out a laboratory research study in the field of environmental Engineering. By working on an assigned project, you will develop experience in planning and conducting investigational/ research work; processing and interpretation of data. You will have the opportunity to discuss the results of the study with staff, technical support staff and to present and explain your findings using a poster as a concise form of illustration. You are given the chance to manage the project as a consultant and submit a report including recommendations to the client, your supervisor in this case. To disseminate the results of your project to a wide range of audiences and enhance your scientific writing skills, your final report will be in the form of a scientific research paper.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
• conduct a literature research study using the different library resources such as electronic databases, text books, Journals, etc
• define project goals; design an experimental program and formulate a suitable documentation scheme.
• manage the experimental program via carry out of experimental runs, collecting data, analysing data and using of continuous evaluation of data to assess progress of project.
• write a scientific research paper.
• present and defend results and recommendations.
Overview of Learning Activities
• Attend introductory session on week 1. The session will introduce OH& S guidelines as per the safety manual and safety procedure
• Participate in the information session on research for published work relative to your project
• Read articles and text books relevant to selected project. Prepare an experimental program and carry out experiments in accordance with your program
• Mange your experimental work and program including liaising with team member, technical staff and your supervisor.
You must wear a lab coat, safety glasses and proper foot wear to be allowed in the lab. It is expected that you will provide your own lab coat and safety glasses.

Overview of Assessment
The following assessment tasks are expected: Literature Review, Experimental Plan and Procedure a Poster Presentation and a final report in the form of a Scientific Paper. Each will contribute to the final grade of the course
