Course Description

You must complete 12 weeks of approved vacation employment, and supply sufficient evidence that the employment is relevant to engineering practice.

Employment may be spread over more than one period, and may be with more than one employer.
Accumulated part-time work in an engineering environment equivalent to 12 weeks full-time is also acceptable.

You will need to find your own vacation job. Watch noticeboards for job notifications. However, you will need to be proactive in seeking work.

The object of this experience is to give you exposure to the professional practice of Environmental Engineering. It prepares you for the transition into the workforce at the end of the final year.

Overview of Assessment

At the completion of your work experience, you must:


• Submit a report by week 10 of the semester you are enrolled in the subject. Reports are to be handed in at the School of Civil and Chemical Engineering office.
• The report is to be 3 pages in length describing the type of work undertaken, the length of time spent working on different activities and how this work has contributed to your Understanding of professional practice.
• Note that you do not have to be employed by the same firm for the entire 12 weeks. The 12 weeks does not have to be undertaken in a single period.
• For each firm worked for, provide original copies on the firm’s letterhead, signed by your supervisor at the firm stating the length of time you were employed with the firm and the type of work performed. This letter is usually one page or less in length. Note that:
• If you wish to keep a copy of the report or the employer letter, you will need to make the copy before submission
• Only original letters from employers are acceptable.
