Course Description

At a time of rapid technological change and considerable turbulence in media and information industries, this course provides tailored tuition in key technologies and applications. You will critically assess and analyse the role technology plays in shaping and organising the social landscape, and you will work with emergent media to explore how communication technologies are inaugurating a new epoch in human history.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

  • identify and evaluate issues and trends in media and communication, including the impact of technologies and globalisation;
  • examine and apply research and evaluation processes of professional practice;
  • reflect on and debate local and international trends in communication scholarship and professional practice, including the implications of convergence in the communication industry.
     


On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • analyse and reflect on academic literature within the topic area and have an awareness of some of the main debates which inform it;
  • discuss and evaluate a series of analytical frameworks which provide a means to understand the consequences of new communication technologies;
  • apply these frameworks to project based digital strategy;
  • undertake independent and collaborative digital research.


Overview of Learning Activities

 

Each class will normally be divided into lecture and tutorial components. Lectures will introduce key themes and topics and explain and illustrate analytical orientations. Tutorials will provide opportunities for group discussion around lecture material, readings, and your own personal and professional experiences.

Lectures will introduce you to specific issues in the study of communication and technology. Tutorials offer an occasion for a different mode of more interactive learning particularly through discussion of set readings which will generally be an example of pertinent scholarly research in the field. It is essential to read these not only for assessment purposes but in order to get the most out of the class.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A course reader will be available or a list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Assessment will occur during the course and at the end of the course. Methods may include any combination of assessment tasks such as reports, reflective papers, group work and presentations.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
