Course Description

This course will introduce you to relevant communications and management theories that support strategic planning and communication management. You will focus on the actions required to communicate strategically in today’s dynamic socio-economic environment and develop an understanding of  the major communication disciplines-public relations, marketing and advertising’s role in the strategic planning process.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • critically analyse and respond to issues and trends in corporate communication, including the impact of technologies and globalisation;
  • reflect on the strategic planning process used in public relations communication;
  • communicate knowledge through situating practice in the context of the literature and best practice.
     


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • interpret and analyse social, technological, historical and economic issues that impact upon strategic planning in communication management;
  • apply the necessary skills to operate effectively as part of a team to develop a strategic communication plan (SCP) for an organisation of your own choosing;and
  • identify and evaluate relevant techniques for negotiating with internal and external stakeholders.

The course will take a blended approach in its deliver with learning activities that involves a range of activities including lectures, readings, class and group discussions, group activities and individual research.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Assessment will occur during the course and at the end of the course. Methods may include any combination of assessment tasks such as reports, reflective papers, group work and presentations.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
