Course Description

This course exposes you to a range of issues facing the modern journalist in professional practice.

You will be encouraged to reflect critically on modern journalistic practice in Australian and international contexts. You will evaluate relevant readings and dissect coverage of significant events and/or issues and other examples of contemporary journalism practice.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Acquire and apply knowledge of local and international perspectives and issues about contemporary journalism.
  • Critically reflect on your own work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgement and ethical responsibility.
  • Undertake research into contemporary journalism theory and practice to explore possible industry and career directions.


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the contextual forces operating on journalists inside and outside the modern newsroom in Australian and international contexts.
  • Assess how journalists respond to pressures on modern practice in national and international contexts, including historical, political and/or technological pressures.
  • Critically reflect on the rapidly changing news environment, with a focus on contemporary issues.
  • Assess a range of primary and secondary sources and evaluate their contribution to current debates surrounding modern journalistic practice.
  • Develop strong, internally coherent arguments within written work that demonstrate critical thinking.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include a range of tasks including reports, in-class tests, class presentations and projects. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Assessment Tasks

The specific assessment tasks will be detailed in the Part B of the course guide. You will be required to complete three assessments: two will be worth 30% and one will be 40%.
