Course Description

This course examines the agency of representation and explores communications as a process of investigating, revealing and constructing landscape. In this course you will develop and integrate techniques to represent and communicate fundamental spatial and conceptual ideas of the Landscape Architectural medium.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
 

  • Demonstrate resolution and control in relation to LA representational conventions through drawing/making
  • Demonstrate the ability to select key techniques and technologies to explore particular ideas
  • Undertake drawing/making as an exploratory mode of design research
  • Demonstrate proficiency with relevant drawing and fabrication technologies
  • Demonstrate the ability to collect and evaluate relevant precedents
  • Demonstrate the ability to use the act of drawing/making to engage with material and spatial qualities of landscape
  • Engage with the method/s of the course and demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the method/s and the broader context


Overview of Learning Activities

LECTURES
Lectures will be delivered weekly by tutors, permanent staff and external guests. The intention of the lectures is to demonstrate why and how certain approaches and methods are used in order to achieve specific outcomes. They will also be an opportunity for you to see other people’s drawing and design practices. The lectures will include a range of precedents which are aligned with the tasks you are performing and which are exemplars in design discourse. The lectures are curated to expose you to a wide range of methods, theories, projects and examples relevant to the workshops each week.

WORKSHOPS
The aim of the workshop series is to demonstrate how to apply and combine the ideas, theories and practices discussed in the lecture. The workshops are also opportunities for you to explore and experiment with analogue and digital drawing mediums – through a series of cumulative tasks which seek to develop your drawing skills. The workshops will provide the foundation through which to set up the assessment tasks for this course. Most of the production work will not be done during class; instead they will be done during non-contact hours. Workshops will consist of tasks, demonstrations of representational techniques, feedback and examples. The workshops are also the forum for you to discuss and practice ideas and methods to further your project. These weekly workshops are integral to the course and it is expected that you will attend and contribute throughout the semester.
