Course Description

This course aims to codify ‘experimental’ video practice and explore relationships with ‘conventional’ forms to develop practical and conceptual methodologies that are expansive and flexible. A variety of moving image language systems will be presented and analysed to form the bases for the student’s development of an individual approach and sensibility. The semester is organised around a screenings, lectures and discussions. The syllabus explores a range of moving image language systems and practical techniques emphasising a rigorous approach to the relationship between technology, form and content. The practical outcomes of the class focus on the development of a hybridised and individual approach to the realisation of a student’s solo projects.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Through the study of Formal Systems students will be able to:

1. Recognise and cultivate conceptual premises for video projects
2. Individually develop effective practical methodologies and strategies for the realisation of video projects.
3. Be conversant in the history and impact of moving image technologies and the development of its attendant syntax.
4. Analyse audio/visual sequences for structure and function.
Successfully execute, or manage the execution of, all stages of their production process.

Overview of Learning Activities

Technical Workshops
In this course the central demands of the editing process provide a focal point for the discussion of the organising principles of a given work. This extends to examine the manner in which principles dictated by the editing stage of the production process radiate back to influence conception and sound/video recording. There is a focus on shooting to edit and the editing process as a plastic art. The mode of production emphasised will collapse several production roles into the one individual in the tradition of the solo video art practitioner. Given this, students are encouraged to develop an individual approach to production that accommodates their particular skills and interests.

Screening Program
The practical components of the subject are contextualised through the screening and discussion of a series of historical and student works in a critical forum. These screenings encourage the cultivation of student’s perception of a flattened screen culture in which strategic resources reveal themselves across the breadth of moving image production.
