Course Description

To introduce students to the techniques, culture and practice of screen based experimental image sequencing with particular emphasis on the creative and economic use of stills, limited animation techniques and the drawn image. This class introduces various animation techniques such as: cut outs, drawing, scanning, single frame animation, image processing, Collage, Rotoscoping, chromakey and compositing. Software includes: Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Flash and Frame Thief


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

To assist students to:
1). Consider and incorporate a wide range of 2D temporal imaging skills, both analogue and digital, into a single project, or series of short projects
2). Specialise their historical/cultural knowledge of experimental animation and screen art culture.
3). Become articulate in the communication of the visual concepts in which they are working in.
4). Consider and utilise the varied screening, exhibition and funding opportunities available to them once they have graduated from RMIT. Resolve all production issues associated with the student’s chosen project.



Overview of Learning Activities

Workshops:
This course introduces various analogue/digital video techniques such as: drawing, scanning, single frame animation, image processing, Rotoscoping and chromakey, to then be composited and further manipulated digitally using Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro.

Screenings:
Each week the technical demonstration is accompanied by examples of experimental animation/video spanning from the early 20thC to the present. There are also more extensive screenings and related lectures organised regularly throughout the year.
