Course Description


This course is the initial course in the Graduate Certificate of Management for Health Care Professionals and upon which other course are based. This course provides students with an understanding of how organizations work and the skills required of those in management and leadership positions within those organizations. Participants are encouraged to critically evaluate and further develop their own leadership and management knowledge and practice. The management of change and its effects in the contemporary healthcare workplace will be addressed. Opportunity will be provided for students to gain an overview of quality mechanisms, benchmarking, and business planning processes.

At the end of the course you should be able to:
• Identify the roles and functions of leadership and management in the health care environment
• Identify the role of selected pieces of legislation in the patient care environment;
• Apply principles and aspects of leadership and management theories to the health care environment;
• Critically analyse the concept of quality and risk management within the context of health and community services;
• Understand the dynamics of organisational change;
• Recognise the conceptual framework that allows the development and implementation of policy strategies that enhance management in health and community services; • Apply the business planning processes and recognise its relevance in selected health care environments.

The underpinning knowledge and skill developed in the course includes:
• To be able to identify the differing management and leadership roles in different health care,
• Recognize the interrelationship of the differing roles in ensuring the functional effectiveness of the organisation,
• Recognize the role of the Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act, Equal Opportunity Act, Health Services Act and other relevant legislation in the management environment,
• Demonstrate knowledge of leadership and management theories that support effective management practices
• Recognise differing change management processes and their application to a variety of situations.
• Identify the link between quality practice and risk management in a contemporary transparent and accountable heath care environment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the business planning process as applied within a health care setting.
