If you have not successfully passed NURS1150 Professional Experience Practice 2 (Course ID 010110), you will be notified to drop your enrolment in Professional Experience Practice 3 in the subsequent semester.

If you have not successfully passed:

A learning support plan will be implemented to ensure safe clinical practice.  The learning support plan will be required to be submitted as an attachment to your Clinical Assessment Tool for each Professional Experience Practice clinical placement rotation until you have completed these courses.  Students are required to discuss and have signed off their learning support plan with their Clinical Nurse Educator at the allocated venue.

Work Integrated Learning:

Students enrolled in this course will be required to undertake placement as part of the assessment of the course.  A number of requirements must be met by students to ensure eligibility for placement.  Further details on each of these are available in Part B of the Course Guide and on MyRMIT.

  • Immunisation Declaration Form part A & B completed in full.  All vaccinations and annual requirements (ie influenza and TB screening) must be completed in full prior to attending placement

There is no flexibility with these requirements.  It is your responsibility to ensure THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE COMPLETED.  Any student who has not provided this information in full will not be able to attend placement and will receive a fail grade for the placement course.


Course Description

This course is identified by RMIT University as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.

You will undertake a supervised professional placement in a prearranged clinical setting for a prescribed period of time. You will work with a registered nurse in the multidisciplinary healthcare team to continue to apply your acute care and/or mental health nursing skills in the patient care setting. You will safely and competently provide nursing care under the direct supervision of a professional nurse for your assigned patients over the designated period of time. Specific learning outcomes will be achieved over the period of your WIL experience. At all times you will undertake nursing care under the supervision of a professional nurse and function within your scope of practice as an undergraduate nurse.

Attendance at the designated facility for the entire 160 hours is a mandatory requirement. Successful completion of this course cannot be achieved until you have met this requirement. If you are deemed unsafe at any time during the WIL experience, or function beyond your scope of practice, you may be removed from the health care setting and receive a fail grade for this course. You will be required to re-enrol in the course in the following year.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability you should contact the Program Coordinator or Equitable Learning Services for further advice. Students need to be able to meet the inherent requirements of the program.

At any time prior to or during your placement if there are concerns raised related to your fitness to practice the clinical coordinator can request that you gain full medical clearance to continue your placement.

You will be notified of specific placement details as early as possible via Inplace.  The placement information is subject to change at any time up until placement, so please check your student e-mail account daily.  Please note: You may have to travel up to 4 hours to attend the clinical venue allocated. 

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP032 Bachelor of Nursing in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse Standards for Practice through the following learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Undertake culturally relevant and age specific nursing care for two or three moderately dependent patients with supervision and prompting from the registered nurse in related clinical settings.
  2. Demonstrate safe practice in relation to Occupational Health and Safety and risk management measures in the provision of supervised care for the acute care or mental health patient.
  3. Employ effective communication skills with the clinical nursing staff and interdisciplinary healthcare team
  4. Apply your nursing judgement and clinical decision making skills within the context of evidence based nursing care for your patient/s to prioritise the patient care requirements
  5. Assess, administer and evaluate pharmacological therapies under the direct supervision of the registered nurse.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to effectively evaluate your nursing care against the patient care requirements.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course is a Work Integrated Learning course that will be conducted in the healthcare setting. You will be required to undertake 160 hours of supervised nursing practice in a designated clinical setting under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. As support and preparation for this WIL experience there may also be clinical preparation time allocated throughout the semester as a timetabled learning experience.

You will be expected to actively participate in patient care as part of the health care team during your WIL experience.

Independent Learning: In line with the professional responsibility for active life-long learning you are expected to undertake self-directed learning activities during this time to develop and consolidate knowledge obtained during the WIL experience.

The activities associated with this course are designed to enable you to apply your acute care and/or mental health clinical skills and knowledge in a supported supervised clinical setting and to recognise and work within your scope of nursing practice.

Assessment completed in the first half of your placement will provide feedback on your clinical progress. Ongoing feedback on your knowledge and clinical skill application will be provided from clinical and supervisory staff. Feedback is provided in a variety of ways including verbal. Individual feedback will be provided in a written format at the end of your WIL placement.

Overview of Assessment

Clinical Assessment Tool: Satisfactory Pass (PX) / Unsatisfactory Fail (NN)

The assessment associated with this course will comprise both formative and summative assessment of your clinical skills and care using the recognised Clinical Assessment Tool which measures your progress across the seven professional standards.

You are required to demonstrate clinical skill congruent to the level of a Year 2 undergraduate nurse. If you are deemed unsatisfactory at the formative assessment, remedial action using a learning support plan will be undertaken before being allowed to continue the placement. If you are deemed unsatisfactory at the summative assessment you will then be required to meet with the Clinical Coordinator to discuss your course progression and the outcome may result in a NN fail grade.

If your placement is terminated early you will be subject to 8.2 of the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Life Cycle-Process Overview-Change or Terminate WIL Activity

Clinical Skill Log:
