Course Description

This course is designed to further enhance the studio skills required to produce photographic images in a controlled studio environment. You will apply a practical use of technique in association with a strong conceptual base to create commercially orientated images based upon meaningful creative expression and strong design.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The objectives of this course are for you to:

  • gain proficiency  in Studio Practice through practice and reinforcement of skill levels
  • develop your abilities to work independently under your own self direction
  • promote conceptual thinking that involves aesthetics, design  and marketing skills relevant to commercial image making


Upon completion of this course you will demonstrate a high proficiency in Studio Practice, visual literacy, technical competence and the development of aesthetic sensibilities in order to produce your  images. The course will promote an understanding of vocational business practices and global cultural, social and professional visual contexts. You will be expected to practice digital image capture and/or film transfer to digital file in order to develop a strong conceptual initiative.


Overview of Learning Activities

Weekly studio sessions provide the opportunity for the development of creative and conceptual skills and the practical application of technique and lighting. These sessions will include peer critique and lecturer feedback.

You  will also engage in personal research and assignment work during your ‘Non Contact Hours’.


Overview of Learning Resources

The RMIT library has a range of suitable texts and the internet forms a valuable resource for research.
You need to provide all props and materials.
Large format cameras and the studios are available in class time and lighting & 5”x4” cameras may be loaned from the store for after hours use.
