Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course assumes knowledge of first to third year tertiary level Operations Research. It would also be an advantage for you have done some Statistics up to the third year tertiary level. A good knowledge of calculus and basic analysis are also essential pre-requisites.


Course Description

This course aims to provide the necessary knowledge of the tools/techniques of Operations Research so that: you will be able to contribute to theoretical and applied research in the area effectively. You will be able to apply Operations Research methods to real-world situations, develop appropriate models, carry out correct analyses and be able to interpret results from your analyses


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of the course, you will

  • be able to model many real world phenomena using concepts from Operations Research;
  • develop a deeper understanding of the theory which underlie many Operations Research techniques;
  • be able to read and comprehend some of the very large amount of literature on Operations Research;
  • be able to communicate Operations Research ideas and concepts to others in a language which people not working directly in the area can comprehend.


Through an in depth study of different courses covering both Operations Research and Statistics,  you will develop a good and comprehensive understanding of the many concepts prevalent in modern Operations Research as well as possessing a set of useful tools which will enable you to apply your knowledge to the real world.


Overview of Learning Activities

You must select three approved courses of one semester duration from the list of courses provided by the Course Coordinator. The courses you have selected should not be a part of any other Honours courses. Each approved course will be a 12 credit point course which is taught for two hours a week for one semester. These courses are in topic areas which will provide an introduction to the theoretical basis and methods of implementation of operations research procedures for the solution to a variety of real world problems. Detailed syllabuses and references will be given in the Coures Guides for the topics.
