Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

It will be assumed that students have enough on line experience.

It will be assumed that students have had exposure to at least one computer programming environment. C++ or Java are desirable although not mandatory. Experience on visual Basic is an advantage in doing this course.

It will be also desirable that the students have basic knowledge about IP networks.


Course Description

This subject provides a comprehensive appreciation of the software technologies for the delivery and retrieval of information using the web. It includes development of a web server to deliver active web pages.

IP Network and HTTP protocol
HTML, XHTML, DHTML, web page design
Multimedia web delivery
Http forms, Java Script, web page controls

ASP.Net
Web site design and development
VB script, MS IIS, Active Server Pages,
Databases, SQL and the web services.
Web access control and web security, SSL
XML, Xform, DTD, Schema, XPath, SOAP, WSDL
Introduction of PHP, My SQL, Apache
Introduction of applications using web technology

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to introduce the key web technologies. Web development and construction is the main thread in this course. But it is not all. In this course, student also explore some web based applications, such as multimedia presentation and streaming, web based monitoring and control. Another objective set in this course is to let student get familiar with the trend and the latest development in the web engineering from perspective of industries and the research community.


On successful completion of this course, students will have developed technical competence and problem solving skills by being able to: understand the basic operation, standards and protocols involved in web technology; build a web site which offers rich interaction between clients and the server; design and set up a secure web based system for information retrieval, communication, monitoring and control; provide basic consultancy for general web construction;. design and develop a web based multimedia presentation and streaming system; describe the latest development in web engineering built up around XML. Apply the web technology to various industrial applications, such as network management; summarize the latest products in the web technology;

As part of this course, student will also develop:
- Teamwork and leadership skills through project work that utilises the technical capabilities as developed in this course.
- Communication skills through report writing and group presentation of the project work.
- Life-long skills for information management by learning to make efficient use of the wide variety of on-line resources to find answers to specific and general technical questions
- Skills in problem solving and decision making

Weekly Laboratory practice to connect theoretical and practical knowledge
Group project.

The expectation is that students attend all lectures. You will not survive in this course if you think that just getting the lecture notes and memorising them for the exam will be sufficient. The exam will focus upon understanding rather than mindless regurgitation of facts.

The lab program is a structured and intensive program that builds upon the lecture program.

Students will make use of the lecture and lab material in a creative manner by creating sites of their own design.
