New Venture Creation 1
This is the capstone course for the Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship). Students will be required to build on the research undertaken in New Venture Creation 1 by strategically implementing the, financial, marketing, human resource and operational strategies identified in your business plan. You may also be involved in business development projects where students will be expected to utilise the skills and capabilities they have developed in the program and in particular competencies gained in New Venture Creation 1.
Students who will be launching ventures will be mentored through this process by RMIT staff and/or industry experts. Students engaged in business development projects will do so in a ’live’ setting under the guidance of a project manager (RMIT staff member) and industry mentors.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the conclusion of New Venture Creation 2 you should be able to in a strategic manner undertake the business development process by:
• understanding the critical need to sustain the business through carefully managed cash flow.
• responding appropriately to dynamic market and competitive forces.
• demonstrating a range of enterprising capabilities to proactively meet the market place needs and expectations.
Students will also develop capabilities in regard to:
- strategic development of business concepts
- developing achievable objectives
- benchmarking against key performance indicators
- understanding conceptual and commercial viability
- working effectively with resources available
- managing group dynamics and self-directed learning
During New Venture Creation 2 students will either:
Work towards launching and sustaining their ventures by:
• monitoring progress against their Venture Launch Plan and determining how they may revise their business model to meet changing market forces;
• manage risk and
• effectively manage key resources (e.g. human, financial, equipment, time).
• work effectively in cross-discipline teams to achieve project outcomes benchmarked against key performance indicators.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will work collaboratively to achieve the goals you establish for launch and growth of your business. Mentoring will be provided by RMIT staff and/or industry/business experts. Peer-to-peer learning will also be undertaken to effectively leverage the combined knowledge of the class.
Workshops will be conducted on a regular basis to enable students to achieve identified objectives. Regular progress reports will be required which will be benchmarked against identified objectives.
Experiential learning will also be undertaken via applied learning in regard to developing business cases for new ventures.

Primary and secondary research is expected to be undertaken and a variety of information sources will prove useful including:
- Timmons, J.A. & Spinelli, S. (2007) New Venture Creation: Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century. (7th Edition). McGraw-Hill: Sydney.
- Industry and Government statistics, e.g. IBIS reports or ABS.
- On-line databases and journals available through the on-line library
Use of DLS
Students also have access to course materials and additional material on the DLS website via the course Blackboards including external Internet links and access to RMIT Library on-line and hard-copy resources
Overview of Assessment
A range of assessment will be undertaken in this course that may involve examinations, mini-quizzes, essays, business reports, case study analysis, presentations and participation.
