Course Description
“COMM 1220 Broadcast Journalism” is an introductory radio and television journalism course in the Graduate Diploma in Journalism. The aim of the course is to provide you with a theoretical and practical grounding in the basic concepts and skills of radio and television journalism.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
By the completion of this course students will have developed practical skills in writing, editing, interviewing and presenting radio and television news.
On completing this course, students will have:
- Skills in writing, editing, and interviewing for radio and television news and current affairs
- Technical competence in the use of equipment used to produce news for radio and television
- Hands-on experience reporting, producing and presenting live news bulletins
- Hands-on experience recording and producing a cut television news story
- An awareness of teamwork and communication skills required for successful newsroom participation
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in writing and presenting stories for radio and television news, and will gain the core concepts of the course through lectures. In workshops and seminars you will undertake interviewing and writing exercises, edit audio and video footage, discuss news and current affairs, and prepare for assessment tasks.
Overview of Learning Resources
As well as readings from the recommended text, lecture notes and other material distributed by lecturer/tutor, students will be expected to watch and listen to a variety of radio and television news programs.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course includes a radio portfolio, one cut news story for television, a pre-recorded television interview and participation in Newsline.
