Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students are expected to complete four courses of the program ( equivalent to 48 credit points of study), prior to commencing their manufacturing project.


Course Description

This course is taken in the second semester of the program. It forms the basis for the research project component of the program. Preliminary research methods will be studied and implemented in a literature search, project identification and definition. The body of knowledge for the proposed research will form a significant part of the course requirements.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course forms the basis for the Manufacturing Research Project 2. Preliminary research methods will be studied and implemented in a literature search, project identification and definition. The body of knowledge for the proposed research will form a significant part of the course requirements.

On completion, the student will have mastered the techniques of:
Carrying out an appropriate information search and fundamental experimentation.
Compiling and presenting a comprehensive report.
To be aware of and to observe the regulations related to plagiarism.
To submit (on time) all work for assessment as described below
To submit (on time), all work for formative feedback as described below
To complete all pre-reading and preparatory work prior to the class for which it will be used
To effectively utilise the academic staff resources provided (consultation time, tutors, email etc)
To participate effectively and honestly as a responsible member of a learning team
To contribute effectively to the learning of peers in a climate of mutual respect and to question each other and the academic staff when uncertain.


The course will provide an opportunity to develop students’  analytical and critical thinking skills.


Overview of Learning Activities

Allocated supervisor will guide students through the process of undertaking literature search, project identification and definition. However, most of the work will be self-directed.


Overview of Learning Resources

These are dependant upon individual project area. Assistance will be provided by the project supervisors. Students are to meet with their supervisor at least fortnightly.


Overview of Assessment

The thesis will be of no more than 100 pages of double spaced 12 point font, including figures. This will be marked by the first supervisor and moderated if necessary by the Course Co-ordinator or other appointed academic staff.
For the thesis, half the marks will be allocated on how the work was communicated, including logical structure, use of English, referencing, presentation etc. The other half of the marks will be allocated for the content.
