For the successful completion of this course students should have passed the prerequisite BUSM3267 ‘Risk Management in Business’, an equivalent course or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.
Course Description
This course is concerned with safety and health specifically in manufacturing and construction industries, through the risk management perspective. The course will aim to explain the legislative, political, economic and social backgrounds to applied workplace safety in these industries.

On completion of this course a student should be able to:
• Appreciate the role of OH&S in the manufacturing and construction industries
• Apply risk models to improve OH&S practice in those sectors

Overview of Learning Activities
The learning activities included in this course are:
• attendance at lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained, and the subject will be illustrated with demonstrations and examples;
• completion of written assignments consisting of numerical and other problems requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter; and
• private study, working through the course as presented in classes and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving conceptual and numerical problems.
Overview of Learning Resources
Students will be provided with lists of relevant texts, library resources (Including appropriate journals) and freely accessible Internet sites. Other material will be provided in class.
Students will be able to access course information and learning material through the Learning Hub (also known as online@RMIT).
Students will need to refer to Victorian Government Acts, Regulations and Codes of Practice/Compliance Codes in Occupational Health and Safety and to Worksafe Australia Codes of practice and Guidance Notes.

Overview of Assessment
Evidence of the ability to practically apply OH&S principles in the construction and manufacturing sectors is required and a student’s performance on this course is assessed by written reports and oral presentations on the topics covered. An end of semester examination tests a student’s comprehension of the concepts and material presented in class.
