Course Description
Micro- and nano-technologies represent smart solutions that enable rapid advances for applications in electronics, biomedical engineering, and communication engineering. This course will describe the current frontiers in micro- and nano-technologies, with specific focus on functional materials, flexible electronics, nanoscale devices, silicon photonics, and smart energy. The physical properties and materials characteristics which are translated into structures and devices will be discussed.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Objectives:
• High levels of technical competence in the field
• Be able to apply problem solving approaches to work challenges and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies
On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
• Describe the frontiers in micro- and nano-technologies.
• Fabricate flexible electronic devices.
• Apply research skills to prepare a literature review.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course will provide an interactive and hands-on learning experience:
• Lectures (with interactive tutorial components)
• Computer-based laboratory sessions (instructor guided)
• Cleanroom fabrication (hands-on) of flexible electronic devices (instructor guided)
• Group or individual project to provide training in research skills, especially literature review
Overview of Learning Resources
You will be provided with detailed lecture and tutorial content as learning resources. Course materials will be made available online.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment (laboratories, project and tests) will occur on a regular basis through the semester to provide you feedback on your performance and the quality of your learning outcomes.
