Course Description

This course explores the role of magazines in the media and marketing landscape with specific reference to Australia. You will examine different types of magazines, from niche to mass market, newsstand to B2B, and their audiences and reach. You will explore how marketing and communications professionals can utilize magazines, through PR, promotions, advertising and custom publishing. You will learn about the different roles in publishing and the nuances of editorial, design and advertising. You will examine the changing media landscape including the impact of digital communications, the growth of multi-platform executions including digital versions, and the resilience of niche publishing.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:
• reflect on the qualities of magazines and whether and how they will be sustained and executed in the future;
• analyse contemporary magazines and magazine sectors to develop an understanding of the diversity of magazine publishing; and
• consider how marketing and communications professions can utilize magazines to achieve their objectives.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
• identify and describe where magazines fit in the media and marketing landscapes;
• examine and analyse existing and proposed magazine titles and audiences;
• identify and assess the quality of the key components of magazine publishing (editorial, design, advertising);
• develop marketing and communications strategies utilizing magazines (PR, promotions, advertising, custom publishing).

The course will take a blended approach in its delivery with learning activities that involves a range of activities including lectures, tutorials, group and online class discussion, group activities, peer review and individual research.

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Assessment will occur during the course and at the end of the course. Methods may include any combination of assessment tasks such as reports, reflective papers, group work and presentations.
