Course Description

This course provides an introduction to heritage issues within the built environment. It adopts the view that heritage places are those that the community values, for whatever reason, and wishes to keep. The course aims to develop within students an appreciation of a sense of place, and examines the various ways that places can be preserved through planning policy and practice.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will gain an understanding of the nexus between heritage, valued elements of the built environment and urban design and will develop a capability to understand "place" and the relevant policy framework, assess the significance of  "place", and develop policy and appropriate guidelines and controls, within the Victorian legislative framework.



Overview of Learning Activities

The course will be taught in intensive mode and will include lectures, workshops and participatory activities including local field trips and site visits.

You will be provided with a Course Reading Pack at the first lecture as well as references to other relevant literature.


Overview of Assessment

You will be required to prepare a variety of assessment tasks which will involve report and essay writing and a presentation.
