Course Description

Designed to equip students, through reading, discussion and practice, with the skills to conduct Work Role Consultation as specific method for management development and/ or applied research.

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onwards your teacher will advise you if you require access to a computer for the course. It is recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus outside class times.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Course Capabilities:
 

  1. Knowledge application of concepts of organisational role analysis.
  2. Critical analysis of the cognitive, emotive and motivational stances taken by self and others in role in organisational settings.
  3. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing about role within organisational systems.
  4. Conduct of a role analysis in a responsible and ethical manner.
  5. Ability to conduct collaborative action research with a client.
  6. Ability to work professionally in the field through the application of learning from the course to work within organisations.

Enabling Knowledge and Skills for Capabilities:
 

  1. Knowledge or awareness of concepts and theories of the specific method of organisational role analysis.
  2. Methods of critical analysis including analysis of conceptual, emotional and motivational stances of self and others in role in organisational settings.
  3. Development of verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Ability to conduct a role analysis in a responsible and ethical manner.
  5. Ability to conduct collaborative action research with a client.
  6. Application of learning to organisational settings.


Learning Objectives:
 

  • Explore the distinction between the concepts of psychological role and sociological role, in organisations.
  • Test in practice a guiding construct of ’finding, making and taking’ an organisational role.
  • Assist a self-selected client to analyse her/his own role performance.
  • Reflect on one’s own performance, from the role of consultant, in working collaboratively with a client.

Individual Assessment:
Case report of the conduct and outcomes of an organisational role analysis performed by the student with a client of his/her choosing.
