Course Description

This course covers the fundamentals of Supply Chain Management in particular the critical management techniques required to achieve maximum customer service with minimum inventories whilst maintaining manufacturing efficiencies.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course students will develop an ability to develop, implement and review innovative Supply Chain Management processes applicable to the Australian textile industry operating in a global economy.

On completion of this course students will be able to:

• Understand how a formally integrated set of planning processes can transform a business, improving customer service and reducing inventories whilst improving profits
• Develop a Demand Management process contributing to the development of sound forecasts and sales plans
• Document a framework for setting safety stocks using a three phase approach
• Understand the key areas of master scheduling, material requirements planning, capacity planning, and supplier scheduling and be able to utilise these proven techniques in their own organisations
• Address key data requirements such as Bills of Material, and Inventory records that support key business planning and control methodologies in their own organisation. Both the methods of achieving accuracy will be learned as well as the audit processes required to maintain accuracy
Outline how to successfully implement a major change management project and be able to measure performance as the project is implemented.

Overview of Learning Activities

Students will attend RMIT’s Brunswick campus for one full-time week. During this time students will engage in practical simulations, role-plays, videos, and exercises which will provide the base knowledge for them to apply these concepts to their own organisation and complete planned assignments.
Students will spend 5 days engaged in a variety of learning activities including lectures, tutorials, group tasks, case study analysis, readings and a presentation by a guest speaker.
Two weeks prior to the 5 days students will be sent a package of pre-reading. This reading, the prescribed text and additional reading, as well as guiding students through the theory of Supply Chain Management, will assist them in completing each of the assessment tasks.
The central learning experience once students return to work is to assess the performance of their own organisations against an "Enterprise Assessment Checklist" that will be provided at the course. This checklist is a benchmark for Best Practice in Supply Chain Management.
