Course Description

This is a methods course that focuses on teaching Mathematics in secondary schools. Students will be introduced to curriculum frameworks and appropriate methodologies in teaching Mathematics at the junior and middle levels of secondary schooling. This course will focus on the planning of classroom and curriculum materials.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to assist students to:

  • Understand Mathematical content used in the secondary curriculum.
  • Plan and implement curriculum drawing on a range of support materials.
  • Understand contemporary approaches to the teaching and learning of Mathematics.
  • Develop practical teaching skills to engage learners in Mathematics.
  • Use curriculum documents and relevant resources to design a course of study and plan classroom activities and materials in Mathematics.


Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the Mathematical content in Years 7 to 10.
  • Relate learning outcomes to selected Mathematical content and classroom activities.
  • Plan an ongoing unit, implement relevant activities and assess students’ learning.
  • Collect and organise ideas and resources supporting the teaching of junior and middle levels of secondary school Mathematics.
  • Understand contemporary approaches in assessment, learning and teaching in relation to Mathematics including recording of individual student performance and reporting within the school community.
  • Show awareness of issues pertaining to Mathematics education, including gender differences, and the influence of information technology.

At the conclusion of this course, students will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following ICT capabilities:

  • Understandings of the role of ICT in learning and implications for the classroom.
  • Awareness of a range of contemporary ICT resources suitable for the classroom.
  • Skills in using ICT for communication, presentation, work preparation and implementation.
