Course Description

This is a methods course that focuses on exploring and developing an understanding of the content and methodology involved in the teaching of Media Studies in secondary schools. The course will emphasize factors influencing the curriculum as well as developing appropriate curriculum and teaching strategies for students in secondary schools. This course will focus on the planning of classroom and curriculum materials.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to assist students to:
• Develop their understanding of how Media is taught in secondary schools.
• Appreciate the influence of the mass media on schools and curriculum frameworks.
• Construct a course of study and unit of work relating to Media, using appropriate resources and materials.
• Develop effective teaching skills and strategies in relation to Media.
• Develop knowledge of current curriculum frameworks in relation to Media.
• Use curriculum documents and relevant resources to design a course of study and plan classroom activities and materials in Media.


Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
• Understand Media and its application in a school and classroom setting.
• Design an inclusive curriculum, with lesson plans and assessment strategies appropriate to current curriculum frameworks.
• Apply a wide range of educationally sound teaching strategies and classroom activities.
• Develop appropriate resource materials to support the teaching of Media courses.
• Reflect upon the importance of the mass media within society and the importance of Media education within schools.
• Understand curriculum issues and factors underlying the teaching of Media.

At the conclusion of this course, students will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following ICT capabilities:
• Understandings of the role of ICT in learning and implications for the classroom.
• Awareness of a range of contemporary ICT resources suitable for the classroom.
• Skills in using ICT for communication, presentation, work preparation and implementation.
