Course Description
This course introduces you to key aspects of thinking and writing creatively. This is a practical writing course conducted over a twelve-week semester.
You needs to be able to think creatively throughout your career. The power of the imagination is often neglected in university studies and students enrolled in any discipline will find this a useful course.
You will explore a different mode of creative writing in each lecture, and will be expected to write and have your writing work shopped (i.e. a writing sample will be presented and members of a small group will offer comments on the sample) in a weekly seminar.

By the end of the course you should be able:
* to explore your own creativity;
* to demonstrate creative solutions to specific writing tasks;
* to examine and discuss the various modes of creative writing;
* to produce writing which is appropriate to, and draws upon the strengths, of various creative writing modes.
Overview of Learning Activities
There will be a variety of teaching methods employed including:
* structured lectures;
* tutorials/seminars;
* work shopping;
* in-class writing exercises;
* and individual consultation and guidance.
You will demonstrate your learning via:
* conceptual problem-solving;
* the work shopping of writing samples;
* written assignments;
* group discussions;
* and seminar presentations.

Overview of Assessment
By the end of the course you should be able:
• to explore your own creativity;
• to demonstrate creative solutions to specific writing tasks;
• to examine and discuss the various modes of creative writing;
• to produce writing which is appropriate to, and draws upon the strengths, of various creative writing modes.
You must complete the following assessment items, within the allotted time-frame, to pass the course:
1. Major Project: One 2,500-word creative writing piece (65%)
You will hand in one 2500-word creative writing piece in one of the studied modes of creative writing, eg. short story, novel, play (due by 5pm Monday, week 13).
2. Seminar Presentation (10%)
You will give a short seminar presentation (5-10 minutes in length) to the class on an aspect of creative writing (during tutorials, weeks 9-12).
3. Tutorial Attendance and Participation (10%)
You will be marked on their tutorial attendance and participation.
4. Tutorial Exercises (15%)
You will receive 2% for completion of each of the tutorial exercises, with a maximum mark of 15%.
