Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This is the part-time version of the Major Project. The Major Project can only be taken in the final semester(s) of the Master of Engineering (Microelectronics) program. It will draw extensively on material learned in the prior coursework component. You will choose a topic in yourarea of interest/expertise and will work under the guidance of an individual supervisor.

Course Description

This is the first semester of the part-time version of the Major Project and will be taken in conjunction with Major Project Part 2 to complete 48CP of research work.  Together the two courses involve two semesters of part-time research work which is assessed by a Major Project at the end of the second semester.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You are expected to carry out an individual piece of research work on a specified topic area, as a Major Project thesis.

As a result of this course, you will:
•Be able to provide a critical survey of the literature;
•Learn to conduct a sustained program of independent work and the work will be original i.e. your own work;
•Have made a contribution to or exhibited a development in the application of knowledge;
•Improve skills in technical writing to provide a thesis document.

Overview of Learning Activities

You must carry out the sustained program of independent work, and the work must be original. You are expected to demonstrate a general understanding of the field of study. The work carried must make a contribution to or show a development in the application of knowledge. The work must provide a clear indication of your ability to undertake systematic enquiry. The literature relevant to the work must have been adequately surveyed. You must demonstrate adequate skill in technical writing and know how to marshal information into a satisfactory report.

Overview of Learning Resources

There are no prescribed references. You should conduct research in a topic of your choice including a literature search to show your mastery of the topic. The supervisor may guide you in your literature search.

Overview of Assessment

At the end of the semester, you must submit a progress report of Major Project Part 1 to your supervisor.
