GRAP2195 Graphic Design Major (Honours) A
Course Description
The course is structured as an educational design consultancy called ’The Works’. The studio based environment facilitates a dynamic pathway for students wanting to enter the design industry by equipping them with hands on experience. The course is about providing opportunities for students to develop and practise their design skills within a creative and managed environment.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
- To extend design and creative skills to meet specific client requirements.
- To gain a broader understanding of the workings of a studio and the designer’s role.
- To articulate design concepts to clients
- To develop proficient production skills
- To actively engage in teamwork activities
- To negotiate with clients and suppliers
Students are provided with the opportunities to demonstrate their creative and design skills by engaging with projectts provided by clients within RMIT University and external to the university. As well as exploring new communication directions, students are expected to develop design solutions to meet client and project expectations. This involves listening, assessing and acting on briefs within a commercial context.
Overview of Learning Activities
1. Studio Practice
Students build on the skills learnt in first semester and further develop their ability to function in a design studio unsupervised. It is anticipated that students are managing their own clients and projects and their developing self-confidence should be evident with each project.
It is expected that the student’s knowledge will evolve from a basic understanding at the start of the program to a comprehensive and informed understanding at the end.
2. Studio Participation
Students build on skills developed in first semester including:
- Writing a brief
- Preparing a design quotation and timeline
- Sourcing supplier quotations
- Brainstorming ideas
- Developing innovative and appropriate communication solutions
- Rationale writing
- Electronic Artwork
- Archiving and file management
- De-briefing and self assessment
- Consultation with industry representatives
- Briefings and meetings on and off campus
- Telephone consultation with clients
- Notification of job progress to clients
3. End of Year Presentation
At the end of the academic year students work as a group to showcase the studio’s work. The format of the presentation is determined by the students and has included exhibitions, audio/visual presentations and gallery installations.
4. Portfolio
Students are required to create a Portfolio to showcase their work. The purpose of the Portfolio is to present their work in a way that is memorable and distinctive, with the aim to create a point of difference for the student and their work.

Overview of Assessment
Students will demonstrate their learning by participating in the learning activities in the course. Students are expected to successfully complete tasks assigned to them during the year within given time constraints. Students will be assessed on the quality, creativity and efficiency of these tasks.
Assessment of these tasks will be provided to students in the form of critique sessions, written and verbal feedback throughout the year and folio moderation by external designers at the end of the year (date to be advised).
