Course Description

This course has been designed to provide students with an opportunity to acquire understanding and appreciation of issues relating to contemporary art practice and cultural production particularly from the point of view of a visual artist and those who promote the visual arts.

The course will consist of a series of lectures to be given by artists and those who influence what is presented in the public sphere such as curators, critics, and gallery directors. A broad range of ideas and issues will be explored in relation to their philosophical and theoretical bases within the framework of what it means to be a practicing artist in Australia today.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an interest in art practice and cultural production with opportunities to access this information from practitioners and those who promote it.

At the end of this course students should

Have a greater understanding of contemporary visual art practice.
Understand the nature and process of artistic production and its application in professional practice
Be able to examine and discuss various aspects of visual arts production

Overview of Learning Activities

The course consists of a number of campus-based presentations by art practitioners and administrators for example, artists, art managers, theorists and critics, (60%) supported by independent research (40%).

Students will be expected to attend lectures and to independently visit art exhibitions, galleries and museums. Students must be able to access their RMIT email account.

Students will be expected to access texts, references and art-based
databases as per the weekly topic.

Overview of Assessment

Attendance at all sessions is strongly advised.

On-going exhibition reviews using a proforma outline as supplied in the handouts. 4 x 800 words each (25% each) or equivalent.
