Course Description
This course will introduce students to the cultural histories and rich repositories of visual arts in major centres varied in both time and space. Cities will include Tenochtitlan/Mexico City, Athens, Rome, Florence, Paris, Kyoto and New York.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
To trace the evolution of the visual arts, including architecture, in key urban centres
To lead to an understanding of critical epochs in the evolution of world art
To elucidate the role of cities as foci of cultural activity
To explore issues in the production, trade and collection of art works
Overview of Learning Activities
Weekly hour-long lectures using a variety of visual material will be complemented by two-hour seminars during which students will be able to participate in discussion and present their own research material.

A list of recommended research material will be supplied in the first class.

Assessment modes will be varied to provide opportunities for diverse learning experiences.
