Course Description

A theoretical and practical course involving analysis of fundamental motor skills and patterns, a selection of major games, and an introduction to swimming and water safety. Students will discuss the importance of physical fitness in everyday living and as an integrated aspect of skill learning. Practical sessions will be included in the program to assist students to understand the application of the theory to traditional games teaching. Personal and community safety issues will be studied and related to specific practical areas. Biomechanical analysis will be introduced to assist students to correctly analyse basic human movement from a developmental skills perspective utilizing swimming and athletics as a practical medium.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

A student will be expected to be able to demonstrate:
• Use of a wide range of resources.
• Application of knowledge gained to the various parameters associated with the formulation of a personalised fitness program.
• Basic Knowledge of safety applied specifically to water safety
• Analysis of a selection of major games with a view to examining aspects such as skill practices, positional play, game tactics and training regimes.
• An applied understanding of biomechanical principles related to skills analysis.
• An ability to provide a safe, healthy play environment that provides opportunities for fine and gross motor development.

Overview of Learning Activities

A variety of activities, both individual and in groups, in practical settings will be drawn on to help students reach the learning outcomes listed above.
Group work will occur through discussions and simulations that are facilitated by staff in face-to-face tutorials. Staff will use these activities to present an overview of topic areas and to direct students to foundational, critical, and evidence-based practice readings.

Overview of Assessment

Due to the practical nature of this program, active participation in all classes is required. In addition, written and design tasks will also be incorporated into the assessment for this course.
