Course Description
Students will be introduced to the multidimensional concepts involved in sports coaching. Fitness and training regimes will be closely examined to gain a better understanding of how to improve sporting performances. The underlying principles of sports psychology will be studied in order to enhance the psychological development of the elite sportsperson. Contemporary health issues will be discussed in order to gain a better insight into the possible problems associated with elite sport. Formal coaching accreditation courses will be used as a vehicle for these studies.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
A student will be expected to be able to demonstrate:
• Use of a wide range of resource materials
• Knowledge and understanding of fitness and sports training methods and techniques, as they relate to coaching
• The importance of health issues related to elite sports persons
• Knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles associated with sports psychology and their relevance to various coaching paradigms
• Development of their own philosophy and values associated with coaching
• Basic skills and knowledge of the coaching content of two selected Level One coaching courses

Overview of Learning Activities
A variety of activities, both individual and in groups, in practical settings will be drawn on to help students reach the learning outcomes listed above.
Group work will occur through discussions and simulations that are facilitated by staff in face-to-face tutorials. Staff will use these activities to present an overview of topic areas and to direct students to foundational, critical, and evidence-based practice readings.
