Course Description

This course provides the opportunity for students to develop new skills in practical music making and to engage in a variety of group music learning experiences, chosen from instrumental, vocal and theoretical areas as appropriate. The course assumes no prior musical knowledge and is designed to give students basic music
literacy skills, the opportunity to learn a musical instrument as a beginner and to experience the empowerment of creating music in a live acoustic ensemble. For education students, the opportunity to be a beginner provides a particularly valuable insight into what their own students experience in a new learning area, and to appreciate a vital aspect of what it means to be multiliterate in the broadest sense.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of this course students are expected to be able to:

  • understand the importance of music as an integral component of an individual’s learning
  • recognise the contribution of musical literacy to the idea of multiliteracies in the broadest sense
  • experience practical music-making as providing a unique way of understanding the world
  • reflect upon the role of live group music-making in the development of positive self-concept
  • demonstrate an understanding of basic music concepts
  • demonstrate and document an increase in personal music skills and literacy level
  • reflect on the experience of being a beginner
  • develop skills in and actively contribute to musical ensemble process and performance
  • engage in self-directed learning by setting personal challenges and demonstrating initiative
  • successfully develop and complete a personal learning contract in practical music
  • collaborate effectively in group workshops to share music-literacy and practical skills
  • develop an awareness of organisational and management skills involved in live music-making
